A hidden fjord village of ~380 souls where the Eira salmon river flows from Eikesdalsvatnet lake down to the fjord — unspoiled, serene, and dramatically framed by peaks rising straight from the water.
Eresfjord has no cruise pier — all ships anchor in the fjord and tender passengers to the small local marina.
💡 Pro move: During busy summer calls, look for pop-up community cafés near the church selling homemade waffles.
Eresfjord is a tender port — all passengers arrive by ship's boat to the village marina.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines | Eresfjord Småbåthavn (village marina)📍 | Tendered |
| Small expedition ships | Floating pontoon near Eira River mouth📍 | Tendered |
The headline draw is Mardalsfossen, one of Europe's highest waterfalls — but the fjord and valley offer much more if you venture in.
One of Europe's tallest waterfalls with a free-fall of 297 m (975 ft). A 30-min drive from port is followed by an easy 45-min gravel path hike to the base. Only flows at full power June 20–August 20 when water is released from the hydroelectric dam above.
Find Mardalsfossen tours →Drive or boat along Eikesdalsvatnet, a 18 km narrow lake hemmed by 1,800 m walls of rock. One of the most dramatically enclosed lake landscapes in Norway — almost surreal on a clear day.
Find Eikesdalen valley tours →A wild, unpaved mountain road of hairpin turns and vertiginous drops — sometimes called the wilder cousin of Trollstigen. Only accessible via small minibus or 4×4 excursions; not suitable for ordinary cars.
Find Aursjøvegen excursions →Nobel Prize-winning Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson grew up at Nesset Vicarage nearby. Combined with a stop at Bogge to see 6,000-year-old prehistoric (Stone Age) rock carvings, this is a rich cultural half-day.
Find cultural tours from Eresfjord →A full-day hike to the Goksøyra summit (13.5 km out-and-back, 1,220 m elevation gain) with a panoramic view over Eikesdalsvatnet and the surrounding peaks. Best July–September; only for experienced, well-equipped hikers.
Find guided hiking in Eresfjord →The village itself is compact and flat — ideal for a quiet stroll along the river or shoreline while excursion coaches head into the valley.
From the marina, follow the flat path alongside the crystal-clear Eira River — famous for Atlantic salmon. Pass the white 1869 octagonal Sira Church, peek at the Coop for a coffee, and continue to where the river meets the fjord. In summer you may spot salmon leaping.
🗺️ See full route in Maps →Walk the fjord-side path with your ship anchored in the water ahead of you, flanked by the peak of Skjorta rising to the east. Small wooden boathouses line the shore. Simple and scenic — a good option if excursions are sold out.
