Getting Ashore in Corpach

  • 1
Tender or dock at Corpach BasinThe canal basin has a 120-metre quay with 3.6 m depth — sufficient for small expedition vessels. Larger ships use their own tenders, landing at the basin dock next to the sea lock.
  • 2
Getting to Fort WilliamFort William is 4 miles away — too far to walk comfortably. Corpach Station (5-minute walk from the pier) has ScotRail trains to Fort William (about a 10-minute ride, check timetable — infrequent). Shiel Buses also run from the main road. Taxis are limited; pre-book or ask pier staff.
  • 3
What's walkable from the pierThe MV Dayspring shipwreck, Caledonian Canal sea lock, Treasures of the Earth museum, and Neptune's Staircase at Banavie (30-min canal towpath walk) are all within walking distance.

💡 Pro move: Highland midges (May–September) can be fierce on calm days — pack repellent or buy 'Smidge' at the local Co-op.

Insider Tips

  • 🚂
Get to Fort William by train: Corpach Station is a 5-min walk from the pier. ScotRail runs to Fort William in about 10 min — but trains are infrequent. Check the timetable before committing.
  • 📷
Shipwreck shot: The MV Dayspring is best photographed at low tide with Ben Nevis visible — go early before clouds build over the summit.
  • 🦟
Midges: May to September, Highland midges can ruin a calm day outdoors. Buy Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft at the Co-op in Corpach before walking.
  • 🚂
Jacobite steam train: Tickets sell out months ahead. If you haven't pre-booked, this is best done as a ship's excursion — they hold reserved seats.
  • 🌧
Pack waterproofs: This is the wettest region in the UK. Even a sunny morning can turn wet — a windproof, waterproof jacket is essential.
