Smeerenburg — "Blubber Town" — was a Dutch whaling station founded around 1619 on the south shore of Amsterdamøya. At its peak in the 1630s it hosted a few hundred men each summer rendering bowhead-whale blubber into oil. Today the most visible remains are the circular brick-and-"blubber-cement" foundations of the try-works ovens. Guides lead a walk among the ruins and explain the site's history.
